Client: Worcester City Council

Project Overview

The Scala Theatre originally opened on 27th November 1922 as a cinema. After running for over 50 years, The Scala Theatre closed its doors on 2nd June 1973.  Following  major internal works,, the building has since been known as Shipleys Amusement Arcade.

In November 2021, Worcester City Council revealed plans to create a new venue by combining the Scala Theatre with the neighbouring grade II-listed Corn Exchange. The venue will be dedicated to arts, theatre, music and other events and will also become the new home of Worcester’s Swan Theatre.

The regeneration project will take place over three years and is funded by the government’s Future High Streets Fund. The Council received £17.9 million from this fund, together with a further £11 million from the local authority and other partners.

Bury Associates were commissioned to carry out a survey of the entire structure.  In order to capture every detail, a combination of  laser scanners and drones was used and the resulting data enabled the creation of a 3D Revit model.

Legacy

Worcester City Council have used the delivered survey items below  for their initial design work and publicising of the project.  Their team  will shortly be using these items to brief architects, who in turn will use the models created to assist with their aspect of the project.  In addition, the designers were provided with 2D CAD drawings, to enable them to differentiate between the varying levels of the buildings.

Client Feedback

“The project required extremely detailed data collection on site. Bury Associates adopted the technique of using drones, laser scanners and ContextCapture to quickly and accurately provide the deliverables we required. The data collected produced accurate 3D models which were used for promotional purposes and design work and will also be used for the briefing of architects. We have been really pleased with the outputs and quick turnaround of this complex project provided by The Bury Associates team”
