bScaler

How often are you sent a PDF, an image or a scan and wish you could scale and measure straight from it? bScaler is a free measuring and mark-up tool for architects, engineers, surveyors and contractors. Open a PDF, a PNG or JPG image, or grab a scaled aerial straight from a map, then scale, measure and mark up right in Chrome - even when the drawing has no usable scale on screen.
What it does
You are often sent a PDF, image or scan whose title block says something like “1:200 at A1”. Printed at A1 that scale is correct, but on a computer screen it is not A1, so you cannot measure from it. bScaler fixes that. Set the true scale, measure distances and areas, drop survey points, mark the drawing up, and export a marked-up PDF, a CSV of points or a DXF for CAD. Everything runs in your browser, so your drawings never leave your machine.
Tell bScaler the sheet size and scale (or pick two points on a scale bar), and you can then measure real distances and areas straight off the PDF, mark them up, and export a tidy marked-up copy to share.

How to use it
Four simple steps: open a drawing, set the scale, measure, and export.
📁1 · Open a drawing
Click Open, or drag a PDF, PNG or JPG onto the window. Multi-page PDFs are handled - step through the pages with the arrows, each keeping its own scale - and even encrypted PDFs, like HM Land Registry official copies, open fine. No drawing to hand? Choose Grab from a map to capture a scaled aerial of your site. Or Grab from a screenshot to pull in anything on your screen - a CAD window, a PDF viewer, any monitor - and scale it up yourself.
📏2 · Set the scale
Click Scale and choose a method: by sheet size and ratio, by picking two points of a known length, or, for a drawing stretched unevenly, set the scale across and up separately (Stretched X and Y). Or georeference straight from an aerial map - pick two points on the map and the same two on the drawing to set the scale and real-world coordinates together. Aerials grabbed from a map come in already scaled.
↘3 · Measure & Mark Up
Use Distance for lengths (single or running) and Area for areas, straight or curved - and cut openings out of an area to read its net area. Drop numbered survey points, and mark up with text, lines, polygons (curved or filled), rectangles, circles, arrows and section or elevation markers.
⬇4 · Export
Export a marked-up PDF or PNG at the sheet size you choose (A0-A4 or US), opening to fit the whole page - complete with a scale bar and your title block - a CSV of your survey points, a DXF for CAD that now carries the original drawing's own text, or a KML for Google Earth. You can also save the whole job, including the drawing, its scale and every mark-up, as a project file and re-open it later to carry on where you left off.
Setting the scale - three ways
By sheet size & scale
Pick the sheet the drawing was made for (A0-A4, US ANSI/ARCH, or custom) and the ratio (e.g. 1:200, or 1/4"=1’). Use this when the title block states the scale and sheet, e.g. “1:200 at A1”. bScaler reads the page and works out the true on-screen scale.
By known length (scale bar)
Click Pick two points, click each end of the scale bar (or any line whose real length you know), then type that length. Use this when the drawing has a scale bar but no stated ratio.
Stretched (X & Y)
For a drawing stretched unevenly, set the scale across and up separately by picking a known horizontal length and a known vertical length. Everything then measures correctly in both directions.
Handy tools
New in this version
- Grab from a screenshot - pull in any window or screen, on any monitor, and scale it up.
- Export Sheet - frame a landscape, portrait or fully custom sheet (drag any side to size it) and export just that area.
- Choose the PDF sheet size on export (A0-A4 or US), opening to fit the whole page.
- Area cut-outs - subtract openings and read the net area; value labels and fills on circles and rectangles.
⎇Select
Click any element to select, edit or move it. Duplicate it from the edit panel and a copy drops in alongside, ready to drag into place. Drag the mid-point handle on any edge of a line, polygon, distance or area to add a new point there.
Editing, duplicating and reshaping
- Choose the Select tool and click any measurement or mark-up; its edit panel opens on the right.
- Change its colour and properties, resize text, adjust a circle's radius or an arrow's length, or rename a point.
- Click Duplicate to drop an exact copy alongside, already selected - just drag it into place.
- To add a point to a line, polygon, distance or area, hover over an edge and drag the small mid-point handle that appears.
- Drag a whole element to move it, or press Delete to remove the selected one.
📍Point - count, coordinates & levels
Drop numbered count markers, or read off coordinates and levels. Give each point an auto-incrementing ID (S12 becomes S14 with an increment of 2, or AB becomes AC) and a feature code. On a map grab, read positions as latitude and longitude or a national grid such as British National Grid.
Coordinates, levels, IDs and feature codes
The Point tool covers counting, coordinates and levels:
- Count markers - click to drop numbered points that increment automatically.
- Point ID - give an alpha-numeric ID and an increment. The increment applies to the number only: S12 with an increment of 2 becomes S14, while a purely alphabetic ID like AB simply steps to AC.
- Feature code - add a code to each point ready for export.
- Coordinates - set a coordinate system under Settings > Coordinate & datum, then each point reads off its X and Y. On a map grab this is automatic.
- Levels - set a datum, then read off a level at each point.
- Use the edit pencil to switch each label field on or off per point.
🗇Labels
Side and segment lengths are hidden by default (the total or area still shows). Turn Labels on, then click a line or polygon to cycle it: show every length, then the value with no corner dots, then all labels off, then lines only, then back to the default. Circles and rectangles can show their area too, plus radius and circumference, or side lengths and perimeter.
Choosing what each measurement shows
- Pick the Labels tool.
- Click a distance or area to cycle what it shows: value, every individual length, area plus perimeter, value only, labels off, then lines only.
- Click a survey point to cycle its label through value, ID and feature code, X and Y, and more.
- Drag any label to tidy it - a leader line stays connected back to the shape. Double-click a label to snap it home.
◎Snap
Snap to the drawing's own lines and to your own mark-ups, survey points, distances and areas - endpoints, mid-points, intersections, perpendiculars, centres and nearest. It works on images and scans too.
Snapping accurately to the drawing
Snapping locks each point onto real geometry - the drawing's own vector lines and everything you have already added.
- In Settings (or the drawing pop-up) turn on the snap types you want: endpoints and corners, mid-points, along a line, intersections, perpendicular, centres, and nearest point on a line.
- As the cursor nears a feature, a clear marker shows exactly where the point will lock on.
- Snapping works the same way when you drag an existing point to a new position.
- On scanned or image drawings, with no vector line-work, you can still snap to anything you have drawn.
⚙Settings
Units, Ortho and Snapping now sit together under one Settings button, along with the new Coordinate & datum setup for the Point tool.
∟Ortho mode
Lock your drawing to the sheet's square, to your coordinate grid once you have aligned its axes, or to your own two-point direction - just select it and pick the two points, any time.

Ortho keeps your lines square as you draw. Choose a mode in Settings or the drawing pop-up:
- Off - draw freely.
- Square to the sheet - lock to the drawing's own horizontal and vertical.
- Square to the grid - once you have aligned your coordinate axes, lock to that grid instead of the sheet.
- Two-point - select it and immediately pick two points to set your own direction; lines then lock parallel and perpendicular to that line. Re-pick the two points at any time.
Selecting any Ortho mode switches off the previous one.
⚖Units
In Settings, switch between metres, millimetres and imperial (feet & inches), and set how many decimal places (0-3) to show. Long lengths and large areas promote themselves to km, miles, hectares or acres, and you can toggle a value the other way with the Labels tool. Everything updates live.
TText
Multi-line notes sized to the drawing, so they scale as you zoom. Drag a label to move it, or drag its corner to resize. Select a note and rotate it about its base in 5-degree steps with the left and right arrow keys.

- Pick the Text tool and click where you want the note; it is selected automatically, so you can type straight away.
- Type multi-line notes - the text is sized to the drawing, so it scales naturally as you zoom.
- Drag the note to move it, or drag its corner handle to resize.
- With the note selected, press the left or right arrow keys to rotate it about its base in 5-degree steps.
🔍Box zoom
Click Box, then drag a rectangle around any area to zoom straight to it. Great for reading fine detail.
🎨Colours & list
Every measurement gets its own colour and appears in the panel on the right, with running totals for length and area.
🗑Clear
Click Clear to remove all the measurements on the current page at once and start again.
⬠Polygon
Click round to close a shape. Make it curved, or give it a transparent fill like an area - with a slider in the edit box to set exactly how solid the fill is.

- Pick the Polygon tool and click round the shape; click the first point again, or double-click, to close it.
- In the edit panel, turn it into a smooth curve that runs through your points.
- Give it a transparent fill, then use the opacity slider to set exactly how solid the fill is.
◇Shapes
Two-point rectangles and circles, or press R or C for a three-point rotated rectangle or a circle set through three points. Rectangles and circles can both take a transparent fill, and show their area, sides, radius or perimeter.

- Pick the Shapes tool for a two-point rectangle or circle - click one corner (or centre) and the opposite point.
- Press R for a three-point rotated rectangle, or C for a circle set through three points.
- While drawing, press D to type an exact size or radius.
- Rectangles can take a transparent fill, adjustable with the opacity slider in the edit panel.
➜Arrow
A clean line with a slim, tidy arrowhead. Draw it to any length, type an exact length as you go, or set the length later from the edit box.

- Pick the Arrow tool and click the start point.
- Click the end point for any length, or press D and type the exact length before you place it.
- The arrow has a clean line with a slim, tidy head.
- Its length shows in the edit box afterwards, and you can type a new length there to reset it.
§Section
Section and elevation markers - a cut line with direction flags and an auto label (A, B, C), looking one way or both ways.
Placing section and elevation markers
- Pick the Section tool and draw the cut line; press D to set an exact length if you need one.
- Fixed-size direction arrows are added automatically, with a label that increments A, B, C...
- Choose whether it looks one way or both ways using the Labels button, and whether the label sits at one or both ends.
- The section arrowheads keep their bold, drawing-standard look.
🛰Map grab
No drawing? Search an address and grab a scaled satellite image of your site, ready to measure - zoom, pan and Box-zoom just as you navigate the drawing itself. Or pick two points on the map and the same two on your drawing to scale and georeference it. A guide only, not a survey.
Grabbing a scaled aerial from a map
- With no drawing open, choose Map grab to open the built-in satellite map.
- Search a postcode or address to fly to your site.
- Frame the site inside the clear 16:9 capture box - the rest of the view is shaded so you see exactly what you will get - and zoom with the scroll wheel, drag to pan, and Box-zoom to an area, exactly as you navigate the drawing itself.
- Capture, and the aerial comes in already correctly scaled, ready to measure and mark up. Every point you drop reads off its position automatically. You can also georeference an existing drawing from the map: pick two points on the map, then the same two on the drawing, to set its scale and real-world coordinates.
- It uses free standard imagery out of the box; paste a free Mapbox token for sharper imagery if you want it.
🏷Title block
Add a title block - project, drawing title, date - printed in a corner of the exported PDF and remembered between drawings.
Scale bar and title block
- Turn on the scale bar and title block in Settings; they appear bottom-right and top-right by default.
- Select and drag either one anywhere on the drawing; drag the title block's corner handle to resize it.
- Double-click the title to edit its text, or double-click the scale bar to set its length exactly (or leave it on Auto).
- Your title text is remembered between drawings, and both print into the exported PDF exactly where you left them.
📥KML import
Bring in a KML file and its points, lines and polygons arrive as editable survey points, lines and areas - correctly placed, and ready to measure and mark up. Points keep their KML name as their ID.

- Choose Import KML and pick your file; its points, lines and polygons arrive as editable survey points, lines and areas.
- Points keep their KML name as their point ID, so stations come across already labelled.
- Import before you have a drawing and the map opens framed on the KML, with its extent outlined in yellow - grab the aerial and your features drop straight onto it, correctly placed.
🌐Grid coordinates
Show map-grab coordinates as latitude and longitude, UTM, or a national grid - British National Grid, Irish Transverse Mercator, France Lambert-93, Netherlands RD, Switzerland LV95, New Zealand NZTM and more - with an Auto setting that picks the right one. Any point with a real-world position also gets a globe icon in the list - click it to open that exact spot in an aerial view on Google Maps.
Choosing your coordinate grid
- Open Settings > Coordinate & datum.
- Choose how map-grab coordinates are shown: latitude and longitude, UTM, or a national grid - British National Grid, Irish Transverse Mercator, France Lambert-93, Netherlands RD, Switzerland LV95, New Zealand NZTM and more.
- Leave it on Auto and bScaler picks the right grid for wherever you grabbed.
- Aerial coordinates are a guide, not a survey, so they show to the nearest metre by default - raise the decimal places whenever you need finer figures.
🗂️Layers
When a PDF has layers, turn any one off and on, isolate one on its own, or press Off by clicking then click a line or a piece of text to switch off its whole layer, or Isolate by clicking to show only that layer. With Select, click a line or text to see which layer it belongs to.
Working with PDF layers
- When a PDF contains layers, a Layers tab appears alongside Measurements & Mark-ups.
- Turn any layer off and on with its eye icon, or isolate a single layer to see it on its own.
- Press Off by clicking, then click a line or a piece of text in the drawing to switch off its whole layer.
- With the Select tool, click a line or text in the original PDF to see which layer it belongs to.
Quick tips
- Hold Space and drag to pan around a zoomed drawing.
- Hold Ctrl and scroll to zoom in and out.
- While drawing, double-click or press Enter to finish, Esc to cancel.
Please note: measurements are only as accurate as the scale you set and the source drawing. Always verify any critical dimension against a properly scaled source.
